2018 Characteristics of Nickel Boron Electrodeposition Coatings prepared by Different Current Type

The Ni-B alloy coatings have high hardness, good corrosion resistance, long durability, and suitable solder ability [1,2], the Ni-B alloy coating has been developed in several engineering fields in recent years. Electrodeposition process is known one of the easiest and economical superior techniques to provide platings by using different metals and their metal matrix composites [3]. Among the electrodeposition processes using direct current (DC) is known most useful and easy method to deposit pure metals, alloys and their composites. In recent years, many researchers have investigated the preparation and properties of composite coatings obtained by electroplating, which mainly focus on electrodeposition prepared by PC and PRC methods [4]. In the present work, Ni-B alloy coatings were prepared from a modified Watts type electrolyte by direct current(DC), pulse current(PC) and pulse reverse current(PRC). For this purpose, current density was investigated for optimization to obtain high quality coatings on the steel substrates. The depositions were controlled to obtain specific thickness (10 µm). The characterization of the coatings was investigated by scanning electron microscopy and X-ray diffraction facilities. The effect of different deposition currents on the surface microstructure, crystallographic structure, microhardness and wear resistance were also investigated. The results showed that the coatings deposited using PC and PRC deposition exhibited significant improvement in microhardness and wear resistance.
